Courses

In all 100-level language courses, students may not enroll in a course at a lower level once they have completed a more advanced-level course.


CHI 101/Chinese for Beginners I                 1 course unit

(fall)

An introduction to spoken and written Chinese, emphasizing aural comprehension and speaking, accompanied by practice in reading and writing.  Cultural audiovisual materials complement the textbook and emphasize the link between language and culture.  Recitation/conversation hour is required. Students with more than three years of high school study in Chinese will not receive credit for 101.


CHI 102/Chinese for Beginners  II               1 course unit

(spring)

An introduction to spoken and written Chinese, emphasizing aural comprehension and speaking, accompanied by practice in reading and writing.  Cultural audiovisual materials complement the textbook and emphasize the link between language and culture.  Recitation/conversation hour is required in CHI 102


CHI 103/Chinese for Beginners III               1 course unit

An introduction to spoken and written Chinese, emphasizing aural comprehension and speaking, accompanied by practice in reading and writing.  Cultural audiovisual materials complement the textbook and emphasize the link between language and culture.  Recitation/conversation hour is required in CHI 103.


CHI 201/Intermediate Chinese I                   1 course unit

(occasionally)

Prerequisite: CHI 103 or permission of instructor

This course is designed to provide oral and written practice in Chinese at the intermediate level.  Ancillary materials stress appreciation of Chinese history and culture.


CHI 202/Intermediate Chinese II                  1 course unit

(occasionally)

Prerequisite: CHI 201 or permission of instructor

Chinese 202 is an integrated, intermediate-level Chinese language course. Besides continuing speaking and listening comprehension, this course offers students additional opportunities to improve their reading ability, to expand their vocabulary, and to further develop their writing skills.  Unlike first-year Chinese, this course will gradually switch the focus from colloquial conversation to text reading.  Several aspects of Chinese culture will be presented and discussed through appropriate level readings.


CHI 203/Intermediate Chinese III                1 course unit

(occasionally)

Prerequisite: CHI 202 or permission of instructor
Chinese 203 is an integrated, intermediate-level Chinese language course. This course offers students additional opportunities to further improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.  Special emphasis will be given to the development of communicative skills in order to carry out conversations on a range of topics related to daily life.  The course also provides students with a more comprehensive knowledge and practice of basic sentence patterns and grammatical structures.


CHI 348/New Chinese Cinema (In English)    1 course unit

(occasionally)

This course is designed to introduce students to how Chinese films since the 1980s engage with critical issues of gender, transnational identity, and post-socialist politics during an age of globalization.


CHI 370/Topics in Chinese                            1 course unit

(occasionally)

Focuses on a different topic every time it is offered.



CHI 391/Independent Study in ChinesE         variable course units

(every semester)

Study of a specific subject related to Chinese literature, language, or culture following consultation between student and instructor.
